My favorite time of the year, here in Oregon, is early spring. Nature is just starting to wake up. I always compare this time to a fresh new tablecloth, laid down in winter, now preparing for the first meal. The promise of emergence in the new season is very exciting. I love to walk along the Sweet Creek trail, near Mapleton. I always imagine that the Siuslaw people, who called this place home, would look at exactly the same things that I look at, while I’m walking. At this time, nature is transparent. There are no real green leaves yet. But there are glimmers of new life, like the magenta flowers of salmonberries glowing and floating in the air. Flocks of canadian geese bring us the sound of a spring celebration. Fat skunk cabbages, delicate fawn lilies, sparkling young branches, colorful and rick reflections in the river … it all starts to set the spring table with a feast of nature.
