Notes from the artist: The two paintings of the 'Laments' series are from a period when I was discovering baroque music, and particularly that of Claudio Monteverdi. I had been struck by the madrigal 'Il Lamento della Ninfa', a desperate cry of anguish from the nymph Oenone after Paris (of the golden apple and the Iliad) had abandoned her for Helen. A very beautiful piece of music, I think. I made a series of paintings of a woman on a bed, restless, imagining her as she goes through a sleepless night in the bed that she recently shared with her lover.
